Understanding contemporary furniture and modern furniture isn’t always easy. It may seem like the definitions of each are changing all the time. Well, in some ways that’s true, especially where contemporary furniture is concerned.
When it comes to buying modern contemporary furniture or designing a space with it, the exact furniture you choose will depend on what era you are trying to duplicate. It may also depend on what region you are trying to duplicate. For example, current contemporary furniture made in Japan is not the same as current contemporary furniture made in the US. So, it’s important to decide what your own definition of contemporary is. There are similar problems with defining modern furniture. When most people define the modern they use words like now. That’s a fair definition, but the modern furniture movement actually started out as the modernism movement, which didn’t really have to do with staying current.
The contemporary modern furniture are newer modernism pieces, while still mainly emphasizing function, also started to look a bit more artistic and in some cases, even futuristic. The use of chrome, metal, glass and other materials gave modern pieces a shiny, glossy and stylish look.
